Nutrition is the foundation of the results you wish to see in your fitness regime. If it’s not working or you are not seeing the results you want or as quickly; you’ll struggle in some aspect of your performance or feel stalled in your progress. Which leads to what? In most cases, its quitting or moving on to something else before letting the program take effect.
Are any of these nutrition mistakes affecting you? Here is Number #4 for today
4. Nutrition Mistakes – Following the hype #4
You wouldn’t expect specific results from your training by just going with the flow (what everyone else is doing). If I want to improve on any of my lifts in the gym but spend too much time high-fiving over heavy bench press sessions with my friends, just because that’s what everyone else is doing, I’ll be ultimately disappointed. It’s certainly ok to say that being social is your priority and have fun doing it, but don’t be upset when you have a great bench press and a crappy snatch. We do “deliberate practice” in order to become better at a particular movement or lift. The same goes for your nutrition, it’s a practice. There will be little trends, supplements that everyone’s talking about, foods that are being praised or vilified, but you can’t be swayed by the hype.
For instance, I was taking a BCAA supplement in order to build and repair muscle. I did my research and found one that had a ton of reviews (mostly good or better) plus the price could not be beat. After taking it this supplement for about six weeks, I had blood work done for my annual physical. Serious concerns over my results regarding my liver. My physician thought maybe I had some sort of cancer in my blood related to my liver. I went for a follow up and showed them what I was taking. Was told to stop taking these BCAAs for one month and then go back for another blood test. Results were back to normal. A very scary time for me, considering that I live a fairly healthy lifestyle and have had no issues regarding my health. So, a solid plan, informed by what works for you (see notes on evaluating and adjusting from my earlier post) is no match for flavor of the month. Stay away from ads that swear by tested results that you can lose weight or gain lean mass in days. Not true. Good old fashion nutrition, solid planning, and being mindful is what will get you results that can last you a lifetime.
We all need help when trying to do this, just know that you are not alone. I too, have my own nutritional hang-ups that I am always working on. I am constantly reminding myself that it’s the failures along the way which are a part of the process. Learning from them and re-applying is the process which will lead to successful results.
