This is the time of year when many people turn their thoughts toward physical fitness, some for the first time. Many options are available, and anytime there are many options, there will be a certain amount of confusion.
For instance, location, type of training, a reputable coach/trainer, type of personality and character that works with you, not against you. Also, someone who is going to understand your thresholds and how to push thru them without injury. In order to help you find what is best for you, your first order of business should be a scheduled consultation with a coach or trainer. regarding fitness programs, a consult should be the priority. Sitting with a coach and determining what your goals are (if any) and how to get started are what they do best. A consult also provides insight of the coaching, programming, training, and personality of the people that are here to help you. Discovering what underlying issues, you may have that has prevented you from past attempts and goals and help you decide how you’d like to approach the problem of getting in better shape than you are now.
This is where exercising vs training becomes a factor. Physical activity is what The American Heart Association wants you to get some of each week. “Physical activity is anything that makes you move your body and burn calories” — the quote from their website regarding what they consider to be necessary for continued physical existence. Essentially, not sitting or lying down is physical activity.
Regarding the “training” approach, which is physical activity performed for the purpose of satisfying a long-term performance goal and is therefore about the process instead of the workouts themselves. The “Process” is what you should be focused on, not the goal itself. And since the process must generate a definable result at a point in time removed from each workout, the process must be planned to produce this result. Training may also be the best way to achieve the goals that many people seek through Exercise. When the focus is only about exercise, this is what we see a lot of…failure to meet goals. In keeping, a focus on the process, this approach is much more sustainable throughout your life span.
So, to what ends do we train to? Well, its different with everyone, this is why it’s so important to schedule a consult. And let me be clear, during your consult, if it sounds like its only about the “sale” or there is a push to signup now, then please move on. Schedule another, don’t settle for second best, this is your life we are talking about, you deserve what is best for you.
