I absolutely LOVE the concept of goal setting. In fact, I think it’s absolutely critical for long-term success. Setting up small steps that you can do every day that you know will yield huge results in the end. Plus, all the healthy habits you pick up along the way is a colossal benefit – Learning, growing, and feeling amazing.
The problem arises when we align the goal to a specific time of year that both prevents us from taking action NOW and gives us permission to abandon the goal once that time of the year passes.
Let me explain…
If you have a goal to lose weight, move better, feel good about yourself or just want to get yourself healthier, there’s no better time to take action than in that very moment of decision. It comes down to what you do in the “now” that gets your started towards that particular goal you set for yourself. Putting it off to start on a certain date can be a recipe for either failing to start or failing to stick with it. As a coach, I see this all the time. Filling ourselves with excuses that its ok to sit and wait for that time to pass. “Then I will start”. Unfortunately, that time never comes. Does it? Instead, we lie to ourselves and convince ourselves that its ok.
This is a terrible habit that we don’t even see or realize. Because “you” not taking action right now, at this very moment…
Is not going to kill you, is it? Nope, not at all. You see, there is nothing at risk when you pause and wait.
Until it’s too late.
Because when you’re serious about something, you take action NOW.
Also, having that time-oriented mindset can mean that if too much time passes (like it gets to the end of January before you take action on a resolution), it’s very common for people to just call it all a wash. (Oh well there is always next year or next month) This is what we tell ourselves. Keep putting it off and putting it off…
There will come a time where you will have to do something, you will have to make a conscience choice. Because, here’s a secret about uncomfortable change…
The way we humans work is that we will not make changes until the idea of remaining the same is more “painful” than the discomfort of making the change.
Are you experiencing this now?
Have you ever experienced either of these scenarios?
Most of my clients have.
The best thing you can do is take IMMEDIATE action when you’re committing to making a change.
So, while I’m fully in support of setting goals, statistics show that resolutions are overrated.
Given that less than 10% of people stick to their resolution long enough to hit their goals, I want to encourage you to start thinking about this new lifestyle you want to create and choose that new lifestyle in each moment and in every action.
This is, of course, easier said than done…
